6 days till the great move North

I am out in my back yard enjoying one of my few remaining boca ciega bay sunsets. Yes I have an adult beverage of my choice close at hand.

There hasn’t been much wind for a while now, but some sailing nut is out there trying. The bay is really smooth tonight.

My Daughter’s 2nd book is published!

She is an author and just completed the 2nd book in her “Lichgates” trilogy.  It’s an epic fantasy fiction, with rich characters, intricate plots, twists, adventure, fighting – and best of all, treachery.

Now, you might think – big deal, some dad pushing his daughter’s book but I promise it’s not that (well, of course it IS that) but it’s also a fantastic book.  She has wanted to be an author since she was 8.  Filled up journal after journal, went to college to get a Creative Writing degree, and has really honed her craft.  This plot has been evolving for 10 or 15 years.  I think it’s better than book 1, and I thought book 1 was fantastic.

When I read it, I felt as if I was watching a blockbuster movie on the big screen in my head.  What’s really nice is that there are lots of characters with lots of motives.  This is not your typical hero, bad guy, magic, epic battle story.  It is really good!

Anyway, don’t take my word for it.  Go buy it.  (Soft cover book or eBook)  And do it through my amazon shop just for fun.  I think if 10 people do it I’ll get about 2 cents.  I promise to plow all the profits back into this blog.  Hey, while setting up this link I checked and found out my lifetime earnings are $0.04.  Yup, that’s 4 cents.  Woopie!

If you read either of these, post a comment if you liked it.

If you haven’t read book 1, better get that first! aw heck, just buy them both.   Buy a bunch, gift season is just around the corner!

DIYC Race Season Results – Long Gone First Place!

This summer I raced on Long Gone, a 42′ Morgan sailboat.  She is based at Davis Island Yacht Club.  The club has a great policy of letting the general public help crew the boats during the Thursday races.  I’ve seen 60 boats out there at one time.  All you have to do is walk up to the bartender before the race and say you want to help crew a boat.  That’s what I did and the next thing I knew I was on the Long Gone.

The final results are in and Trophies handed out.  Long Gone did very well.

Since I’m moving back North, I won’t get to participate in an entire season.  HOWEVER, I am planning to come back for a long weekend sometime when it’s still cold up North and it’s warm down here and catch a Thursday race.

So here are some pictures I took while on the boat.  Video at the bottom.  I think the last two pictures are pretty awesome. Good times…

Here is a video where we pull a fast move and pass another sailboat.  I think that’s Nick in the background sounding pretty pleased with the maneuver.

I Pitch-Poled a Catamaran today!

Today my good friend Emily introduced me to the Clearwater Communitcy Sailing Assocation.  It’s right there on Sand Key in Clearwater Beach.

It looks like it is a great sailing center.  Wow, there was so much going on.  People were there for recreation sails (like us).  There were kids (8-10 yrs old) rigging up dingies for a sailing class.  There were teenagers rigging up windsurfers for a sailing class.  There was a fundraiser with live music.  A real party atmosphere.

The launch beach looks like this:

See that guy in the red life jacket by the cat that is half on the beach and half in the water?  That is LIKE the one we had, although ours is next to it over to the right behind the yellow sign.

Before I describe this, let me tell you that this is the first time I’ve been on a catamaran in maybe 30 years, and even back then I only steered one a couple of times.  They are VERY different in handling than our little Catalina Capri’s.

We hopped on the cat and did some really long beam reaches up and down the intracoastal waterway.  The wind was blowing pretty strong when we started, and then got stronger the longer we stayed out.  As we passed right in front of the center, the wind picked up.  I noticed that our downwind pontoon dipped down, burying itself 90% in the water.  I could tell this would probably be a bad thing by the way the boat reacted.  So I asked Emily to move back a little.  She did and the pontoon came up nicely.  But then it seemed that the back of the upwind pontoon was burried to deep, causing a wake and slowing us down.  So I asked her to move forward a little.  Oops.

Almost imediately, the pontoon’s leading point buried itself in the water and the rear of the boat went up like it was on one of those cherry picker trucks with the operator pushing the up button.  Sort of like a semi-slow motion disaster in progress.  I went up, up, up with it, then down down down into the water when my horizontal seat became a vertical non-seat.   But, I’m not alone in doing this sort of thing:

I love the end of that video where he says “I loved every minute of it, ha ha”

While I was there I went right by the place I stayed my first 2 days in the Tampa Bay area.  Here is the boat I stayed on.

I marked the place on the back of the boat that caught fire while I was on board.  You may have to zoom in to see it.  You can see the shore power cord still running to the back of the boat.  That fire was the departure signal that had me looking for a place when my current condo came up for rent.

Where I get to see a beautiful sunset over the bay every night.

My Blog is one year old!

Actually, it’s a little older than that.  My anniversary was Nov 1, and somehow I had in my head it was Nov 11.

I don’t usually check, but I thought I’d share some of my numbers.

Clearly, I’m not doing this for the fame or fortune.  But I’m surprised I’ve had so many views.  I really like that it’s a way for my friends to keep track of me and to make new friends.

I was asked if I’m going to keep it up once I move North.  The answer is yes, I like it so I’m going to keep doing it.  I’m moving into a big old house with a lot of rehab projects, and you can be darn sure I’m getting another sailboat, so stay tuned for further adventures of CAPN REHAB!

The Capn is moving North

As I like to put it, I’m sort of like a retarded reverse snow bird.  I lived in Florida the summer of 2011, Maryland the winter of 2011-2012, Florida the summer of 2012, and I’m moving back to Maryland over the Thanksgiving weekend so as to not miss any cold weather the winter has in store for me.  HOWEVER, this time I’m moving North for good.  As much as I love Florida (and I do love Florida), I love Mrs. CapnRehab more.

COUNTER TO OUR PLAN, she landed a BIG promotion , she has found herself a great dressage trainer and bought a terrific horse.

So she won’t be following me down here to Florida…  That only leaves me one choice, so it’s off to Maryland I go.  I’ll be leaving some really great friends, and taking with me some wonderful memories.  Memories like:

Being given a sunfish – OK, this is still a work in progress.  (Not much progress)  I am taking it with me and will finish up there where I have a garage to work in.

I packed a lot of fun into this summer.  I’m headed to some great things though, I’ve landed a job that looks like it’s going to be challenging, exciting and rewarding.  We are buying a house that amazingly enough needs some rehab.  We’ll be pretty near the Chesapeake bay so I think sailing is still in my future.

It just so happens I’ve found an O’Day 22 on Craigslist, exactly the model of the one I sold when I went to Florida, but in WAY better condition.

But I did find this other Other O’Day, and it’s a 27 footer….
