Are you laughing with me, or at me?

I originally decided to keep this story to myself.  Then, like a dumb*ss, I told my wife.  She laughed.  Hard.

Then I decided to keep it to myself again.  Then, like a bigger dumb*ss, I told my mother.  She laughed.  Hard.  I think she even snorted.

So again, I decided to keep it to myself again.  But then my dedication to my readers got the better of me.  I think I owe it to you for being such loyal readers not to leave out something like this.  (NOTE: If this is the first post of mine you’ve read, then just ignore that last sentence).

So here is what happened.

As you know, I just moved to Maryland and am now living on a farm in Upper Marlboro.  You may not know that this is a 50 acre farm that recently harvested a crop of feed corn.  Apparently the harvest machines aren’t 100% effective, so there is a lot of corn laying about the fields.  There is this roaming flock of birds that has been showing up pretty regularly and giving the field a good chomping.

You might think the birds would clean it out and move on, but they’re always swarming around, landing for a short while, and then boom, they all jump up and fly away.  They never have time to eat much so they keep coming back.

Yesterday I  heard a raucous chirping sound coming from outside.  I went out and it was an even bigger swarm than usual.  Thinking of you, my loyal readers, I ran back inside and grabbed my camera and captured this video from the porch.

While I was looking at the birds and the camera I saw a big chunk of them land in the field behind the trees.  I had the brilliant dumb*ss idea that I would run over there and make them all fly away, getting some great video.

Remember that bit about the porch?  It is important.  Without looking down, I just ran off the porch forgetting there was a 2 foot drop.  Mom imagines I looked something like Wile E. Coyote just before he falls into the Grand Canyon.

Fortunately for me, the camera was not recording so I don’t have to show you that too.

While she was laughing, my mom suggested that since I didn’t get video I should stage a reenactment.  Get Mrs. CapnRehab to hold the camera and then I run off the porch and fall down while she films it.  I’m pretty sure this is when she snorted.

I think she was laughing at me.

Made it to Maryland

CapnRehab is now back where it all this rehab stuff started.  Yes, back on the farm in Upper Marlboro, MD.

Our little adventure went well, with an uneventful ride up Interstate 95.  With the heavily loaded U-Haul trailer I was pulling my poor truck could only manage 6.6 miles per gallon.  And with 1250 miles clocked during the trip, OUCH, that sure hit the pocketbook.

Here we are on the day after a wonderful Thanksgiving with my boys in Orlando.  Sailboat and windsurfer riding fine on the roof of the trailer.

Sunrise on the farm.  It was spectacular. (Notice there are no leaves on the trees.  This is called winter.  This is what you get when you have a change of seasons.  Change of seasons is good so you don’t get bored by having sunny weather all the time.)

I also started the new job today.  I think it went well.  They gave me homework.  This job may cut into rehab projects.  Will keep you posted.

CapnRehab’s windsurfer is operational

I purchased a windsurfer on craigslist.  It is really old and missing a mast, so I got it for $50.  It sat around on my back porch and remained on my “I should do” list for the last few months.   I figured I should go ahead and get the mast before I move, because parts may be harder to find up in the fridid north Maryland.

Last weekend when I flippedsailed the catamaran I finally had one guy look at my sail and the fitting that connects the mast to the board.  He said come by the shop and he could set me up with a mast and modify the connector for $400.  ouch!   I needed to find an alternate source

Yesterday was “Get a windsurfer mast” day.  I headed over to WaterSportsWest and talked to the owner Steve.

Steve was great!  He spent about an hour and a half showing me different options and setting up the board to go.  His guess was that this board is from the late 80’s to early 90’s.   I used to have one I got sometime in ’82 or ’83.  This one looks a lot like it.  So I got all rigged up for $260.  I got a mast,  a mast base with extension, a connector to hook the base to the board, a boom and sail battens.  What a difference in attitude from the other guy.  If you’re in St. Pete and need to buy or rent anything for water sports, this is the place to go.  They’ll even deliver rentals.

Since it is Florida and of course Sunny and warm I decided to take it out sailing.

Since my backyard is a beach on Boca Ciega Bay, I went there.

Sailing a windsurfer for the first time in almost 30 years!  It was harder than I remembered!

For some reason, it felt like I needed to stand way forward on the board.  You can see in the picture above that my left foot is in front of the mast and my right foot is just behind it.  But the board has foot straps for the right foot that are way back near the end of the board.  I haven’t quite figured that one out.

Here is a video – not that impressive but it’s me on a windsurfer.

And after the water fun, it was time to relax on the beach with  my favorite adult beverage and watch the sunset.  After dark we even had a campfire.

C plays golf

My sister sent me a golf picture from her tournament and said put it on my blog.  Before I saw it I thought there was no way I was putting a golf picture on my sailboat blog.  But, I think you’ll agree  I just had to share this picture!  By the way, they came in second place.  Way to go sis! (They may have distracted the other players to gain an unfair advantage)

Post a comment if this made you laugh or smile when you saw it.
